3 Snack-Size Twitter Tips to Bolster Your Career By Jacqui Barrett-PoindexterAdvice abounds on how to use social media to advance your career and  job search. Beyond reading the volumes of great books, breaking down advice into manageable bites is a smart way to venture into the often-rough social networking waters. Also, choosing one site and really getting your feet wet is helpful to prevent social media overwhelm and scattershot behavior. The following are three snack-size tips to help you get started using the niche-networking site, Twitter.Tip No. 1: Create a Twitter handle that articulates your value. This may simply mean using your name, particularly if your personal brand and unique value are highly connected to your name. So, @JaneDDoe may just be the perfect draw to brand you. However, if your brand is better exuded through a descriptive representation of what you do, whom you serve, how you serve, and so forth, then consider drawing a visual word picture. The challenge: Creating this handle to  represent your brand  in j ust a 15-character limit. But you can meet that challenge. It just takes thought and brainstorming.Check out these eight examples of personally branded, value-focused and/or descriptive Twitter handles to get your juices flowing:1. Are You a Good Neighbor - or The One Everyone Hates Most of us humans are quite adept at recognizing what annoys us.   But youre perfectly normal if you arent quite as conscious of how what youre doing might be affecting others.   And theres no place thats more evident than on the home front. Lots of neighborhoods seem to have their resident who frustrates, annoys, or infuriates everyone else.   Hopefully, thats not you.   But are you a truly good neighbor who takes care to contribute a positive vibe to the neighborhood?   Or are you one of those who on occasion forgets to consider how your actions might affect others? With summer approaching, now is a good time for a few reminders to keep you from becoming the neighbor that everyone hates! Is Your Curb Appeal Appealing? Whether youre a homeowner or are renting, you probably appreciate the visual appeal of well-kept properties.   And in fact, its about more than just the look.   Neighborhoods that are manicured and tidy have higher resale values than those that are not. Got weeds?   Have a drab or plain looking yard that has little or no flowers or shrubs?   The texture and color variations of plants and hard landscaping (rocks, stone, pavers and such) add a visual richness that both you and your neighbors will appreciate. Pets Are Awesome Unless You Dont Like Pets Sure, you love your pet.   In the U.S., 68% of us have a pet of one sort or another.   But that means there are 32% of us out there who dont have a pet.    For whatever reason, theyve chosen to forego the joys of having a small creature around the house.   Odds are, they dont want your creature, either. While many cities have regulations regarding pets, its still primarily up to you, the pet owner, to be mindful of your non- pet loving neighbors.   So keep these pet tips in mind: Dont let dogs or cats run off leash. Pick up droppings and properly dispose of   them. If your dog loves to bark, consider training classes to quiet them down. About Those Odors and Noises You may be one of the lucky ones who have never been downwind of annoying smells or smoke, or both.   Ive had both, and I can tell you it destroys your outdoor experience.   From the neighbor who liked to cook terrible smelling concoctions to the one who liked to (illegally) burn household trash, Ive had a nosefull. Have you ever been working two jobs, or three, and maybe even going to school?   Those times when every minute of sleep isnt a luxury but a necessity? And the neighbors music or dog or loud car exhaust kept you awake?   No, you dont want to be that neighbor. Odors and sounds have a way of wafting through the air an amazing distance.   So if youre engaging in any activity that is noxious to the nose or might be an auditory assault,   remember that your neighbors may not find it as tolerable as you. Its All About Balance Yes, its true that your space is your space.   But your space is part of a neighborhood.   Being a good neighbor means remaining conscious of the feelings and needs of those who share that space with you.   Its easy.   Just remember the words of wisdom that came from your Mom, to treat others the way youd want to be treated. So keep a healthy balance of respecting both yourself and your neighbor and youll   both be happier!

Some Guidelines on How to Format Your Federal ResumeThere are no 'best' methods to write a Federal resume. Opinions vary on how to format and edit the resumes, so there is no consensus on what is best. What you can do is get good assistance on how to format the resumes in a way that is not likely to offend or disqualify you. The resume will not be what it could be if you do not learn to structure it correctly.When it comes to formatting a Federal resume for employment with the federal government, there are a few factors that you need to consider. First, your background should be clearly presented. People generally are unaware of the education and the certifications that they have. The Federal Government does not generally hire people without a high degree of competence, especially if they are trying to obtain employment with the Federal Government.The second thing to consider is how to format the resume. The Federal Government considers resumes to be the first presentation of yoursel f to employers. This is why it is important to highlight your achievements. The use of bullet points are recommended.The use of formatting should be kept to a minimum, and the use of bullet points is highly encouraged, especially when using a template, because it helps to communicate clearly your accomplishments. For example, if you were an officer in the U.S. Air Force, you may choose to list your rank on your Federal resume. However, if you were a fighter pilot in combat, this may be something that should be put into your personal statement. The use of charts, graphs, diagrams, and other graphical formats are encouraged. You can even use videos, such as the ones used by Google and Microsoft, to illustrate your experiences and achievements.Remember that if you are submitting your resume electronically, you will want to have the hard copies in advance of your application deadline. It is recommended that you submit your resume to as many of the three agencies as possible, so that you will be read and considered. Also, you should make sure that the original resumes that you send will be read carefully and reviewed before your hard copies are returned.Each Federal agencies have a specific resume format and there is no single standard. How to turn around a bad day - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Bad days happen to the best of us. Days where you just wake up in a really bad mood. Where something (or nothing) has made you angry, sad, frustrated, disappointed, whatever. Days where you know up front that MAN, this is going to suck. You still have to get up and go to work, but before you even get there, youre already seething inside. You try to do your job but somehow all the angry, dissatisfied clients have conspired to call you and complain on the same day though you have no idea how they coordinated that little feat. Everything your co-workers say to you sounds incredibly stupid. Everyone seems out to annoy you. The next person to open his mouth is likely to get his head ripped clean off. Not much fun, huh? Luckily, you can do something about it. Here are six ways to turn around a bad day. 1: Accept your bad mood Being in a bad mood is not that hard. Being in a bad mood while trying to force yourself to cheer up really sucks. Fighting a bad mood only prolongs it, so if youre mad, be mad. If youre sad, be sad. This does not give you license to be rude and unpleasant to innocent bystanders, it just means that you need to recognize and accept your bad mood to be able to do something about. 2: Tell others In one chapter of the Happy At Work Book, I describe how the IT support department at medical company Leo Pharma give employees permission to say when theyre having a bad day. With the result that people have fewer bad days and recover faster from the ones they do have. You can try to keep you bad mood a secret and put on your happy mask. Guess what, youre fooling nobody. Your co-workers will notice and they will wonder what theyve done to piss you off. The best thing to do, is to tell the peope you work closely with. Simply tell them listen guys, Im in a really sour mood to today. Im not sure why, but its nothing you have done. If I bite your head off, I apologize in advance. 3: Look inside first In the extremely influential book Emotional Intelligence, Daniel Goleman argues that EQ, your emotional quotient, is what makes you successful, not IQ. This means that the truly successful people are not the smart ones but the ones with the best emotional skills. Goleman defines five emotional competencies that make up EQ, two of which are: The ability to identify and name ones emotional states and to understand the link between emotions, thought and action. The capacity to manage ones emotional states ? to control emotions or to shift undesirable emotional states to more adequate ones. In other words, EQ relies on your ability to recognize and deal with your own emotions. When youre in a bad mood, its extremly tempting to look around you for sources of that mood. Man Im annoyed today. Must be Paul talking loudly on the phone. Or Lisa being late with the specs once again. Or We tend to think that a bad mood is always caused by something or someone else. And when were in a bad mood, everything suddenly becomes annoying, making it even easier to find justifications for the bad mood. But not every bad mood has a reason. Maybe you just slept badly. Or youre coming down with the flu. Or youre just having a bad day. In these cases, trying to justify a bad mood is a suckers bet. Instead, you must look inside yourself first, to see what might or might not be the cause of your negative emotional state. Heres one way to do it. 4: Remember the good stuff When youre in a foul mood, everything is bad. But the good things you appreciated yesterday, where you werent as annoyed, are probably still there youre just not seeing them. Spend a few moments to try think of at least one or two things that arent all bad. Something you look forward to. A person you like at work. Something nice that happened recently. 5: This too shall pass Youve been in a bad mood before. It passed. So will this one. Its no big deal. 6: Take some quiet time And if youre having a really bad day, it may be a good idea to withdraw a little if you can. Take a walk in your lunch break. Sit and work somewhere quiet. Take a loooooong bathroom break. Consider going home early or taking the day off. Or this may happen: NB The tips in this post work for the occasional bad day. If you find yourself having one bad day after another, you need to do something more. Your job may be bringing you down, and you may be in danger of contracting stress. You may even be having a depression. If you think this may be happening, do something and talk to someone.
