Learn the CCARs Style For Your ALJ Federal Resume

Learn the CCARs Style For Your ALJ Federal ResumeLearn the CCARs Style For Your ALJ Federal ResumeLearn the CCARs Style For Your ALJ Federal ResumeBREAKING NEWS Congratulations, if you are invited to the Online Component. We recommend our ALJ Writing Guide to review the 13 ALJ Competencies We also recommend our Structured Interview practice if you are invited to the Structured Interview component of the ALJ Examination.Attention ODAR Attorney-Advisors and Other Qualified Candidates Get your CCARs ready for the upcoming 2016 ALJ ExamOn Friday, March 4, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management announced that the Federal Administrative Law Judge exam will soon open for qualified candidates. OPM administers the competitive examination process by which the register of ALJs is created and maintained. In 2013, OPM released news of the upcoming announcement approximately one month ahead of time. In 2009, only two weeks notice was given.Qualified Attorney-Advisors at the Social Security Admini strations Office of Disability Adjudication and Review (ODAR) have been encouraged to apply to take the upcoming exam. Experienced litigators and administrative lawyers in private practice or in other government roles should also apply. Although the precise contents of the ALJ exam are a closely held secret, the application process which starts the process requires a resume and qualifications narratives to document 7 or more years of qualifying experience. Licensing details are also required.Competing effectively for adjudicatory positions requires mastery of the CCAR style of accomplishment writing. In a shortened, abstract form, CCARs help flesh out a candidates resume. In full narrative form, they find their way into other parts of the testing process, including the Structured Interview, during which candidates are expected to tell stories that reveal key aspects of their past performance. Most trial lawyers know that winning a jury trial requires more than argument and technical sufficiency. It requires a story and evidence consistent with a predetermined theme. In federal competitive hiring, that theme is driven home by CCARs. The CCAR enables the government to examine how candidates have performed historically, using their knowledge, skills and abilities- also known as competencies- to deliver measurable, high quality outcomes.Thats why the USAJOBS.gov Resume Builder expressly asks applicants to describe not just the job held, but also ones accomplishments. The Resume Builder gives applicants up to 5000 characters- about a page and a half per job block- to describe the job and synopsize their best CCARs, thus bringing their resumes to life. The CCAR Accomplishment Builder can help you build your best Federal Resume for the ALJ Announcement.CCAR Example (drawn from multiple candidate examples) Challenge In 20XX, the SSA Office of Disability Adjudication and Review (ODAR) did not have a complete platzdeckchen of its rules and regulations correlating with for matted exemplar decision language. I led a project to create a compendium that would help ALJs and decision writers in our region find what was needed to draft decisions.Context At the time, I was an ODAR Attorney Advisor in the XXXX Region. I carried out research, decided how the law applied in disability cases, and drafted 100s of ALJ decisions.Actions I gathered all of the case law, rules, and sample language relevant to our cases. Then I organized it and created a compendium of source materials for other attorneys and ALJs to use. Results I presented my results to my colleagues and to the ALJs, who found it immensely helpful. It was quickly adopted and used by everyone in my office. Over the past XX years I have periodically updated the materials and they are still being used today to deliver legally correct, high quality decisions in an expeditious manner.Be prepared by drafting your own CCAR narratives todayFind out how ALJ candidates can use their CCARs effectively to apply an d compete effectively for a slot on the ALJ register. 5 Ways to Prove That Youre the Best Candidate for the Job

5 Ways to Prove That Youre the Best Candidate for the Job5 Ways to Prove That Youre the Best Candidate for the Job Your ticket has been punched and as a job seeker in this economy, youre in a unique position. One million jobs have been added this year in the U.S. and the unemployment rate is at a 16 year low. This puts you in command and provides you with leverage in the interview process. But, you still have to get the job Join me on the red carpet as I provide you with a glimpse behind the velvet ropes of the recruiting department. Ive identified the top five techniques that will help you convey all that intellectual property contained in your brain. Create what I call coming attractions. This technique will allow you to introduce your skills and set the tone of the interview. It also answers the classic and dreaded question Tell me about yourself. Prepare a 45-60 second summary of the highlights of your qualifications and experience. Be sure to include why you are looking for a new position. It should be so well-rehearsed that it doesnt sound like its well-rehearsed. Go big-picture and be enthusiastic but concise. Be professional but show your personality . It goes something like this Ive spent the last ten years in roles of increasing responsibility for a diversified engineering firm developing my skills as a project manager. I have won several awards for my performance and Ive been promoted twice. I love solving problems in innovative ways and working as a team with the best and the brightest in our industry. Im ready for a role that combines my passion for infrastructure expansion with the tools and resources available at your firm.Do your research. Read about the company on their website and look at reviews on Glassdoor . Ensure that you have a good understanding of how the company makes money and what uniquely positions them in their industry. Be prepared to share the details that youve gathered about the position and how you ar e the candidate who is distinctively qualified to solve their problems. Youve probably heard that you need to nurture your network and build your personal social media brand but a potent technique to make you stand out quickly is to ask a former co-worker, manager or supervisorin to connect with the hiring authority at a desired firm as an independent, third-party reference . Even though the hiring manager may not know your former boss, a proactive voicemail or email message with details of your previous performance can go a long way. In addition, Ive found that most people believe there are six degrees of separation but when you get in a room with like-minded individuals in a similar industry, its actually more like two degrees of separation. We live and work in a small world. Ensure that you direct the characters and the script. Be prepared to answer and ask the right questions. Many companies perform behavioral interviews . Behavioral interviews are used to determine if you can quickly recall and articulate a previous scenario. Theyre also used to find out what you have learned from your work experiences. The questions will be worded like this Tell me about a time that you failed and how you reacted or Tell me about a time that you went above and beyond to satisfy a customer. What did you do and why? Behavioral interviews indicate to the hiring manager that youre suitable for the job based on your previous experiences. Be prepared with 3-4 anecdotes that you can apply in different situations. Keep them brief and be sure to answer the question completely . In addition, be prepared to ask relevant and substantial questions of the interviewer(s). Dont ask about benefits or compensation at this point make sure you have a good understanding of the company , the department, the role and the managers expectations. I appreciate when a candidate asks how they can be successful, the priorities of the role (or the company), and the milestones that will nee d to be met. Shoot for asking 3 or 4 questions . If you have additional questions ask the interviewer if you can email him/her for further clarification. At the conclusion of the interview, you should thank the interviewer for their time, offer to provide additional information and then ask for the job. This last part is significant and often overlooked. Gather your thoughts while still in the meeting to put together a brief summary of your skills and reiterate your interest. For a dramatic finale, leave something behind that will remind the interviewer of you. Several years ago I was interviewing with a COO for an Executive Recruiter role. A key responsibility of the job was to gather intelligence on potential passive candidates. To demonstrate my proficiency, I left behind a folder containing sample research reports. He later told me that no other candidate had been as thorough or demonstrated their skills in such an impressive way. You know what makes you a superstar and you k now that an employer would be lucky to have you Why not set the stage and share how and why youre the best candidate for the job. Oh, and may the force be with youOne final thought before the credits roll. If you or any of your contacts are in interested in working at AECOM , feel free to share this message with them. We have a lot of great opportunities more than 3,000 in fact and are constantly seeking the best people Julie Cox is a Talent Acquisition Sourcing Leader for AECOM . Ten Tips For A Better Post-Grad Career Search

Ten Tips For A Better Post-Grad Career SearchTen Tips For A Better Post-Grad Career SearchAt what point during the einstellungsgesprch process do I inquire about the salary? You should only ask about salary after the company has given you a job offer. The interview process is a time for you to learn about a potential employer and for the employer to learn about you. Until the firm gives you an offer, the balls in their court.Once youre offered the job, you have room to negotiate.Given the trend toward business casual, is it still proper etiquette to wear a suit to an interview at a company with a casual dress code? What if they tell me to wear whatever I want? You should always wear a suit to the interview. It doesnt matter if the company follows the business casual trend or not - companies who have this policy still expect you to show up in a suit. Youre there to make a first impression, so it better be a good one. Even if you feel overdressed, its better to look too polished than too sloppy.Should I send a follow up note after I submit my resume? If so, how long should I wait?Yes, you should. Unless the company needs to fill a position immediately, there is usually a lag between the time the company receives your resume and the time they contact you for an interview. At the same time, you shouldnt wait too long before following up. A week is the optimal time to wait - unless you believe that the company needs to fill the job immediately. Also, its best to make the note short and to the point. Ask them if the position is still open, and be sure to include the date that you sent your resume along with all contact information. E-mail is ideal for this purpose.Do cover letter rules change when one is applying for a job via mail?A bit. When applying for a job through e-mail, you should still include a brief cover letter outlining your skills, experience and goals. Your best bet is to include the cover letter in the text of the e-mail, along with your resume. Some com panies do not open attachments, fearing viruses. If you do include an attachment with your e-mail, you should include both the cover letter and the resume in the attachment.Should I put my college GPA on my resume? What about my SATs?In general, you should only put your GPA on your resume if it is above a 3.0. You may also include your GPA in your major, if it is higher than your regular GPA. If your GPA is not that high, leave it off and concentrate on extracurricular activities, clubs, and internships. If I havent had any internships or jobs during college, should I list my professors or family members as references?First of all, theres no need to list your references on your resume. If a company is interested in you, it will ask for your references. Use people who know you in a professional capacity when at all possible. In a pinch, use professors or people you have worked with in school clubs or during school activities. Avoid listing family members. The only exception If you hav e worked at a family business, you may list family members among your references. What questions should I ask?Normally, an interviewer will ask you if you have any questions at the end of the interview. This is your opportunity to demonstrate your good listening skills and your genuine interest in the company. Its a good idea to make a list of questions beforehand, so you dont appear at a loss. The type of questions you should ask arequestions that show a sincere interest in the company, not salary or benefitsrequests for clarifications about things the interviewer has said during the interviewdetailed inquires about the actual responsibilities of the jobShould I shave my facial hair off for the interview?Unless you have a fully-grown and neatly trimmed beard or moustache, you should always be clean-shaven for the interview. Any work-in-progress facial hair will make you look sloppy and unprofessional.Got another question we havent answered here? Were happy to answer your career ques tions. E-mail us your queries.

Infographic Impact of Your Online Reputation

Infographic Impact of Your Online ReputationInfographic Impact of Your Online Reputation16When youre applying for jobs, you might think that your job application (i.e., resume and cover letter) will speak volumes for your work experience, education, level of professionalism, and your hire-ability. And in part, thats true. But did you know that the vast majority of hiring managers will look at your verbunden reputation and social media presence (Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, etc.) to try and attain a complete picture of you even before they call you for a job interview?Thats why you should know where you stand- angeschlossen that is. In the utterly adorable .Me infographic Online Content Has Real Life Implications, people were surveyed to see the impact of your online reputation- and believe us, it can make a huge difference in whether youre hired for a position or not.Whether youre busy job searching or, ahem, surfing through Facebook, more than half of people surveyed (53 percent, t o be exact) have not monitored online information about themselves. Even scarier is that 79 percent of Americans state they havent done anything to even manage the info thats online about them. Its not surprising, then, that only 22 percent of people found information that is exactly what they want to see. One in three people found that other people have shared their anthroponym and influenced content (negatively, one might assume) and 12 percent were unpleasantly surprised by the search results they found.Unfortunately, it tends to be when people find negative or incorrect info that they take the steps to do something about it. Of those who found erroneous information online, 77 percent have become proactive in monitoring online content about themselves. Some people suggested that creating a personal website (61 percent) could help manage their online reputation- or help, at least, buffer the bad info thats currently out there. So lets say you Google yourself and are less than thril led with the results. Here are some steps you can take1. Try to get the info removed.Lets say you were at a friends party and someone snapped an unflattering shot of you. To add insult to injury, the person then tagged you- and platzdeckchen the picture to public. If the information is traceable to a source (like social media, for example), by all means you should contact the person or company and fight to get it removed. There are service that can help you to clean up your online reputation, but they can be costly and theres no guarantee everything will be removed.2. Create new content.Despite your valiant efforts to remove the smudge from your online presence, theres simply no way to get rid of it. The next best step is to bury the incriminating info with positive information instead. Create professional social media accounts on Facebook and Twitter and update them often. Consider creating a personal website- 61 percent of those surveyed in the .Me study said that can help clean u p your reputation- or at least buffer the bad info thats currently out there.3. Be vigilant. If you havent set up Google alerts for your name, nows the time. Its fairly simple to do, and youll receive email alerts whenever your name (or anything else that youve set for your Google alerts) appears online. That way, if something bad shows up, you can tackle the problem right away, ideally before a hiring manager finds it.The impact of your online reputation can make all the difference when youre job searching. So even though you might think its just one more thing to do in your never-ending list of job search responsibilities, monitoring- and correcting- your online reputation is a very necessary step towards landing the job you want.Readers, are you monitoring your online reputation? Did you ever find anything that had to be removed? Let us know what happened in the comments below

Always Come Armed With DataIn some countries, relationships are at the heart of business. In others, such as the US, business leaders value hard facts and stats over anything else. This is why its always a good idea to keep some impressive reports on hand when traveling for business. You never know when you might need to convince a skeptic.2. Their Weekend May Not Be Your WeekendWhile much of the world observes a Monday-Friday workweek, this is far from universal. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), for example , the workweek generallyruns from Sunday to Thursday, with Friday and Saturday asthe weekend. Do a little research ahead of time to determinewhat kind of schedule you can expect before your next trip.3. SmallGifts Can Mean Big RewardsIn some countries, like Japan, its customary toexchangegiftsduring business meetings. For this reason, itsa good idea to carry a few trinketswhen youreon the road - just in case. For the most part, what the gifts are will matter less than the act of giving itself. That said, the kind of gifts that tend to be received well in Japan include foreign brand-name items, fine wines, and cufflinks.4. Time Isnt Always of the EssenceWhile itsconsidered pretty bad form to show up late for a meeting in the US or UK, some other countriesare much moreblasabout punctuality. In the UAE, for example, it isnt all that unusual for meetings to start hours later than scheduled. You cant force other countries to adapt to your concept of timeliness, so the best option here is t o just bring a book or laptop - or anything to keep you occupied while you wait.5. Invest inNoise-Cancelling HeadphonesBusiness travel can often be hectic, and the airplane may be the only distributionspolitik where you can catch a break. Unfortunately, planes arent exactly known to be calm environments. The screaming baby is a trope for a reason But you dont have to cross your fingers and hope your next flight is calmer. Just pick up some noise-cancelling headphones. They can make a world of difference.6. Carry Some Spare ClothesYou never quite know what life is going to throw at you. Sudden rainstorms, buses driving through puddles at ill-timed moments, coffee spills - there are all sorts of ways to ruin your suit before a meeting.Always keep a reserve of clean, ironed, neatly pressed clothes back at the hotel.7. Record EverythingWhen youre sitting in a meeting in a foreign country, it can be hard to keep track of everything going on, let alone take thorough notes on the proceed ings. Instead, carry a recorder with you. These are affordable, easy to use, and easy to carry, and theyll allow you to confidently attend any meeting, knowing that you can always refer back to the tape later if need be.Irma Hunkeler works forBlueGlass.co.uk, a digital marketing agency.
